According to ancient lore, King Mandhata, a noble descendant of Lord Rama and an ardent devotee of Shiva, would journey frequently to Kedarnath, offering khichdi as a symbol of his humble devotion. Moved by his unwavering faith, Lord Shiva appeared to him in a vision and instructed him to perform intense tapasya in Kashi. It was here, in response to his penance, that Shiva manifested in the form of a Shivling made of khichdi, merging the divine with the earthly—a form now venerated as Gauri-Kedareshwar.
